Pizza Restaurants in San Diego

San Diego isn’t just about tacos and burritos, its pizza scene has quietly grown into something worth chasing. You’ll find everything from classic New York slices in North Park to inventive pies topped with local ingredients in Little Italy. And yes, the wood-fired ovens here crank out some seriously good crusts.

If you swing by Bronx Pizza on India Street, don’t skip their grandma slice,it’s like a crispy, cheesy love letter to New York’s borough. Or try Bronx’s pepperoni if you’re feeling classic. For something a little different, check out Filippi’s Pizza Grotto in Point Loma, a staple since the '50s, where the sauce has a little tang and the dough stays perfectly chewy.

Late-night pizza runs? San Diego has you covered. Places like Wembley’s in South Park often have lines, but the wait’s worth it for a slice slathered in gooey cheese. Just a heads up,some spots are cash only, so bring a few bucks just in case. You’ll want to enjoy your pie with a cold local beer, pizza and craft brews are basically San Diego’s unofficial couple. Fresh, flaky dough, tangy sauce, and top-notch cheese, with a few local twists, that’s what you’re in for.

Local pizza tips

If you want an easy win, check out Filippi’s Pizza Grotto in Point Loma. The place has been around forever and still slings satisfying, no-nonsense pies. Their tomato sauce has a little tang and the crust stays chewy without being soggy, which is rare around here.

Also, don’t overlook pie places in the suburbs like Encinitas or Ocean Beach, lots of hidden spots. And pro tip: on weekends, some pizza joints are packed by dinner. Try hitting them earlier in the evening or be ready for a wait if you want a table indoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got pizza questions about San Diego? Here’s the scoop from a local.

North Park’s Bronx Pizza nails that classic thin crust with just the right chew and lots of cheese. It’s a local favorite among ex-New Yorkers like me. If you want a no-frills, straight-up slice, that’s your spot.

Definitely. Wembley’s in South Park stays open late and serves great slices, perfect if you’re out and about around midnight. Just remember they usually prefer cash, so plan ahead.

Little Italy and North Park are pretty solid bets. Little Italy has a few upscale spots with wood-fired ovens, while North Park leans more casual with some great classic joints. Both are worth checking out.

Many do. You’ll see pies topped with fresh veggies from local farms or even seafood options near the coast. Places like Buona Forchetta mix traditional Italian techniques with California freshness.

While it’s not like Chicago or New York, San Diego’s mix of cultures means you get creative menus, think California-style pizzas with fresh avocado or spicy chorizo. It’s a nice twist if you’re tired of the usual.
