A few tips from someone who lives here

If you’re here for a few days, don’t try to cram it all into one trip. San Diego’s charm is in its neighborhoods. Spend a morning wandering Liberty Station’s art and food scene , it’s less touristy and the farmers market on Saturdays is awesome. And get yourself to Sunset Cliffs around golden hour. I can’t recommend kayaking through the sea caves enough; it’s quiet, a little adventurous, and the views can’t be beat. Plus, always bring a light jacket for the evening, even in summer. The ocean breeze sneaks up on you.

One local secret: if you want a break from the usual spots, head to the Mission Trails Regional Park. It’s huge, belongs to the city, and is fantastic for a peaceful hike without the crowds you get in places like Torrey Pines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about what to do in San Diego? Here’s what I hear most.

If you love the outdoors, hiking Cowles Mountain or Torrey Pines is a solid bet. Kayaking in La Jolla’s sea caves is one of my favorites, especially at sunset. And if you want to chill, the beaches like Coronado or Moonlight Beach never disappoint.
Absolutely. I’d recommend the taco shops in Barrio Logan or Liberty Public Market if you want variety. For something different, hit up a seafood shack in Point Loma , the fish tacos there are off the charts.
Boat tours can be great for seeing the city from a fresh angle. I prefer smaller, less touristy options , there’s this little harbor cruise from Seaport Village that’s relaxing and usually not packed. Plus, you get a cool view of the skyline and harbor seals.
Watch out for weekends at La Jolla Cove if you want to avoid crowds. Parking can be brutal and it gets packed by mid-morning. Also, some of the nightlife spots in Gaslamp can get really touristy and pricey, so scope out a local bar for a better vibe.
For sure. Balboa Park’s Spanish Village is like an open arts studio where you can chat with artists working on everything from pottery to painting. Also, check out Old Town for some classic California history and regular events , it feels more alive than just a museum.
