Description
Step into the world of 'Top Gun' with a visit to the iconic Top Gun House, formerly known as the Graves House. Built in 1888, this historic landmark in Oceanside, California, is a prime example of Folk Victorian architecture and was featured in a scene from the 1986 film. Today, it houses a charming pie shop, offering a sweet taste of history.
Next, head to the former Naval Training Center in Loma Portal, now transformed into the cultural and culinary hub known as Liberty Station. This sprawling property at the tip of Point Loma served as the home of “Viper,” the commanding officer of Top Gun in the movie. These nice digs are best seen from Cabrillo National Monument or by boat sailing around the tip of Point Loma.
Then, visit Kansas City Barbeque, a San Diego staple near the Downtown waterfront. This was the setting for a memorable scene where Maverick and his pilot pal Goose performed “Great Balls of Fire.” Goose’s piano is still there, amid lots of other “Top Gun” memorabilia adorning the walls.
Finally, explore the USS Midway Museum, home to the decommissioned USS Midway aircraft carrier. Commissioned eight days after the end of World War II, Midway was the largest aircraft carrier in the world until 1955, as well as the first U.S. aircraft carrier too big to transit the Panama Canal. She operated for 37 years, during which time she saw action in the Vietnam War and served as the Persian Gulf flagship in 1991's Operation Desert Storm.
