Description
Balboa Park features gardens, walking paths, theaters, and museums spanning the arts and sciences. This walking tour offers a comprehensive overview of the park’s development and its role as a city symbol.
The tour starts at the Founder’s Statue, recognizing San Diego’s visionaries who reserved 1,400 acres in 1868 for the park. You then visit the California Tower, built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, notable for its city history depictions.
Next is Alcazar Garden, inspired by Spanish gardens and used in both the 1915 and 1935 expositions. It provides a quiet setting and photo opportunities with the California Tower in the background.
The tour continues to the Old Globe Theater, a Tony Award-winning venue modeled on London’s Globe Theater, followed by a walk along the Prado with its unique architectural details.
Stop at Zoro Gardens, a sunken butterfly garden formerly a nudist colony during the 1935 exposition, supporting the full butterfly life cycle.
The route passes the Bea Evenson Fountain, Natural History Museum, and Spanish Village Art Center where you can observe artists at work. A coffee break at a local cart follows near one of California’s largest Morton Bay fig trees and the San Diego Junior Theater.
The Botanical Building and lily pond are next, important during both World Wars as a recovery site for injured military personnel.
The tour concludes at Plaza de Panama, with your guide providing directions to the Visitor Center for maps, souvenirs, and museum passes, plus dining suggestions and tips for further exploration.
